The Complicated Simplifires

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The Simplifires’ new 12-track creation Why People Make Countries takes you on a sonic journey with the peaks and troughs of any good roller coaster ride, both structurally and perceptually. Using a variety of effects, the Simplifires create a distinct and unique vibe that consists of straightforward beats beneath a blanket of gritty, ambient sounds.
A consistent range of vocal layers strengthen the diversity of these audio techniques. Why People Make Countries is a solid rock and roll record.

The quirky introductions to the title track “Why People Make Countries” and “Bombs” are exemplary of Simplifires’ stylistic technique. They gracefully guide the listener into the band’s world using eerie, melodic undertones. Simplifires keep things interesting at the outset of each song.

The catchy backup vocals on “Last Night’s Party,” and the unique dual interplay of electric guitars drive this congested track into a wild ending. The time changes, vocal cadence, and emergent guitar solos on tracks like “Unsupervised” resonate a sound reminiscent of The Killers.

But familiarity can be exhausting and at times I grew weary of this easily anticipated formulae. In parts of Why People Make Countries, vocalist DaveO’s voice seemed to be drowning beneath the expanse of the album’s extensive vocal layering. However, the lyrical talent and engaging vocals of daveO, together with the heavily distorted guitar licks were enough to bring me back around.

The diversity and energy that emanated from Why People Make Countries would undoubtedly yield an unforgettable live show.

I give this record 3 Frontside Thumbs out of 5.

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Here in NYC, Trouble & Bass is growing and back in BK where they belong. This time it is Studio B where they make their new home. This month they have special guest Fake Blood from London. Fake Blood has done remixes for Hot Chip, The Kills, and Armand Van Helden to name a few. He is known for his tune Mars, where you can get here.

Fake Blood - Mars - Zshare

The tune has an early 90’s rave feel to it with simple modern day drum samples influenced by bmore club or ghetto tech. With the epic intro, it just drops to a really nasty, gritty electro bassline. It’s so simple and catchy, but makes the dancefloor go off.

T&B also is playing host to Dutty Artz, who gets a shot at playing the side room. Dutty Artz is known for their world beats and tropical sounds. It consist of Geko Jones, Dj Rupture and Matt Shadetek to name a few. You can actually check out one of Dutty Artz protege’s Talisen, with his new mix Apricity. Although Talisen is not going to be with the Dutty Artz crew tonight, he will be on his own turf at Bard College doing a show up there before the Holidays. Check out his myspace

Musicians Twitter Roadmap

By Ariel Hyatt (@CyberPR) & Laura Fitton (@Pistachio)

[Note from Music Think Tank: This is a comprehensive post on Twitter.  If you are an artist and you have not heard about or used Twitter, you should read this post.]

It has been over 18 months since I joined the Twitter community and since I began to really use it something has shifted for me radically. Using Twitter has directly contributed to my life in meaningful ways.

I must admit that when I first saw it, I wanted to cry.  Why would anyone care about what it is I do?  As a still recovering traditional publicist I couldn’t really understand the benefit for my artists if I was using Twitter.  After all, it’s about my clients not about me. How wrong I was…. It turns out the social web isn’t directly about you, it’s about other people: The audience that you become engaged with, and how you interact with them and with them in mind magic can happen.

Blip Festival 2008

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

So the Blip Festival is happening for the 3 year in a row. It’s pretty much a bunch of game and music geeks get together to perform, make and teach each other about 8bit music or chiptune music. These guys strip down the most simplistic and bare essentials of a sound and cut it up, chop and splice them together to make, in essence a 21st century version gameboy and nintendo music. its great. check out the video and site
