Kelly Clarkson made history with this week’s Billboard Hot 100 when her single “My Life Would Suck Without You” surpassed Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” for the largest leap to No. 1 in the chart’s 50-year history. Jumping from the No. 97 spot, this is the second time Kelly has set the record for largest jump to No. 1, previously doing so in October 2002 with “A Moment Like This” at No. 52.

“My Life Would Suck Without You” sold more than 280,000 digital downloads in its first week of availability and is also doing well at radio, jumping 58-38 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and 27-18 on the Mainstream Top 40 list.

Great interview with rising musical star Colin Munroe. In it, he shares his views on how the digital revolution has changed people’s musical tastes, what it’s like being a producer, and discusses his upcoming full-length and tour. He even hints at a possible collaboration with Kanye in the future.

After spending a few days in Anaheim, CA at the NAMM Show, a more-than-100-year-old tradition, I got to see what some consider to be the future of music: new designs for guitars, drums, and pianos; new lines of DJ and mixing equipment; updated editing software. For updates and info on these items, check out http://www.namm.org/thenammshow. However, there’s plenty that will most likely go under the radar this year:

1) Electric bagpipes with a direct out and on-board EQ

2) The Kazoo - not only available in many varieties, but free lessons were also being given

3) A guitar that tunes itself… I didn’t see this demonstration but heard stories of it. It stores the settings for multiple tunings and changes based on user-selection and a simple strum.

4) The Trouble With Boys (http://www.thetroublewithboys.com/ttwb.htm): Picture AC/DC at age 12. Most notably, their guitarist shreds something fierce, rivaling many guitarists of any age.

5) The Chapman Stick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapman_Stick): It’s been around since the 70’s, but it still is pretty sweet.

6) 60-year-olds mixing teen screamo bands… For some reason, I think both parties have different aural visions.

7) JamVOX (http://www.voxamps.com/jamvox): Put simply, it is Guitar Hero on CRACK.

8 ) Scratch-and-Sniff CDs & DVDs: Aside from disc replication and duplication as well as album artwork design and package printing, there is a company marketing 50 scents of scratch-and-sniff discs. MP3 who?

This barely scratches the surface of what was at NAMM, but I wanted to give coverage to some of the things that will most likely lose out to news of celebrity sightings, signings, and performances, or pictures of interestingly-designed guitars and some shiny instruments.

The Midway State’s track “Never Again” went GOLD today!

In addition, their “Change for You” EP (released only through iTunes Canada, $2.49) was featured at the top of both the Rock and Pop pages in the iTunes Store.

Ten Second Epic celebrated Monday in a big way, kicking off their 2-week tour with a show at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. As if that wasn’t enough to cure your case of the Mondays, they also posted the 2 remixes from “The Virtual EP” on their myspace for a limited time.
